The Music Education Group, Inc (MEG Inc) was established in direct response to the massive budget cuts that destroyed most music education programs in Atlanta’s Public Schools. Ric Ross, MEG, Inc’s Founder and Executive Director conceived the idea as a result of his twenty-year career in the music business.
Research has shown that musical study helps to develop critical thinking skills and self discipline skills and improves a child’s early cognitive development, basic math and reading abilities, self-esteem, SAT scores, the ability to work in teams, spatial reasoning skills (the ability to perceive the world accurately and to form mental picture of things), and increase school attendance. It also provides children with a means of self-expression. Also, researchers have found that children involved with music education are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college, and are less likely to be involved with gangs and substance abuse.
